Rawtenstall is a town in Rossendale, Lancashire. It lies on the River Irwell, with higher ground surrounding the town.
The town
Rawtenstall developed largely along the valley floor and lower ground, extending onto the surrounding hillsides. The River Irwell flows through the town from the direction of Bacup, with routes following the valley and connecting Rawtenstall with neighbouring settlements.
The surrounding hills and open moorland give Rawtenstall a distinct valley setting, with higher ground visible from many parts of the town.
